Ray was the fourth of eight children of William Elkington Butler (born 1864 in Cogh, Victoria) and Ellen Annie White (born 1887 in Melton, Melbourne, Victoria. William was a Farmer at Korumburra in Gippsland, Victoria when he married Ellen in Melbourne in 1903. They settled at Korumburra where they raised their family.
Ray was Clerk in Korumburra when he married Dorothy May Gabbe (born 1913 in Warragul, Victoria) in 1931. Ray enlisted in the Army in December 1942 and was a Staff Sergeant (Service No:VX119929) attached to Army Canteen Service when he was Discharged in January 1946. Brothers John Elkington (Service No:VX7496); Norman Spencer (Service No:V389080); Francis Harold (Service No:V389439) and sister Marjorie Enid (Service No:WR/724) also served in WWII.
Ray and Dorothy settled at Abbotsford in Hoddle, Victoria where Ray worked as a Clerk. He was Publican of the Commercial Hotel at Horsham in Wimmera, Victoria when Dorothy died in 1963. Ray remarried in 1966 to Jean Amy Deane (nee Benwell, born 1912 in Coburg, Victoria) and continued as Publican of the Commercial Hotel until he retired and settled at Korumburra. Ray died in 1977 and Jean in 1983.
