David was the fifth of nine children of Walter Ernest Bishop (born 1887 at Elimbah Park, Toorbul in QLD) and Elsie May Bowden (born 1892 at Nundah, QLD). Walter - a Carpenter - and Elsie married at Nundah, QLD in 1914 and moved to Caboolture in 1923.
David enlisted in the RAN in February 1942 and was an Ordinary Seaman II (Service No:B3280) on the HMAS Cerberus, HMAS Brisbane, HMAS Kuttaburra. In June 1943 he was promoted to Able Seaman on board the HMAS Lanka, and was on board HMAS Moreton when he was Discharged in March 1946. Brothers George Ivan (Private; Service No:QX14470); Ernest Henry (Corporal; Service No:QX30400) and Eric Stanley (Sapper; Service No:QX60140), wife Jean Audrey Paul (Aircraftwoman; Service No:102665); and Brothers in Law Lester Paul (Flight Sergeant; Service No:43591); James (Jim) Arthur (Flight Sergeant; Service No:429393) and Leslie Earl McDonald (ACMF; Service No:Q122673) also served in WWII.
David was a Labourer in Caboolture, QLD when he married Jean Audrey Paul (born 1926 in Toowoomba, QLD) in Caboolture in 1949. David and Jean settled in Caboolture where David worked as a Farmer and Builder. David died in 2003 and Jean in 2018.
