Oliver Howard was First Pilot in F.H Bunce's crew on the 23 march 1944 when on an anti-submarine patrol over the Bay of Biscay when they were attacked by nine German ju 88's.The crew fought off the German attack shooting down one of the attackers when the Germans gunfire set fire to a fuel tank on the Sunderland.Bunce ditched the aircraft into a 30'to 40 ' swell .All crew members escaped from their sinking aircraft but five crew members were swept away from it by the swell and perished among those lost was Oliver Howard who had been thrown through the Sunderlands windscreen when it impacted with the water

Oliver Lawrence Ismay HOWARD was born in Sydney on 16th October, 1917
His parents were Edward Hutchinson HOWARD & Florence Margaret ISMAY who married in Kelmscott, Western Australia on 22nd March, 1913
He married Jean Mitchell NOBLE on 24th February, 1943 in Canongate Church in Edinburgh, Scotland - 1 son Wayne Lawrence HOWARD - they arrived in Western Australia in 1946

His father Edward Hutchinson HOWARD (SN 4306) served during WW1 in the 1st Pioneer Battalion
Two of his brothers also served during WW2
