Crew member of Sunderland B of 461 Squadron commanded by F.H.Bunce attacked by nine German Ju 88 and forced to ditch into sea .All crew members escaped the aircraft and were present on a wing of the aircraft however five crew members including Ray Smyth were washed off the wing by heavy ocean swell and were unable to board life rafts and drowned
