Bill was the fourth of eight children of John William Schuhkraft (born 1864 in Doncaster, Victoria) and Mary Anne Elizabeth Crossley (born 1890 in Yorkshire in England). John was an Orchardist at Doncaster in Victoria when he married Mary Anne in 1913. They raised their family in Doncaster, where John was an Orchardist until his death in 1944.
Bill worked as a Labourer in Doncaster, Victoria and in 1941 enlisted in the Australian Army. He served as a Gunner (Service No:V111653) and was attached to 10 Field Regiment when he was Discharged in December 1943. Brother Stanley Arthur Schuhkraft (Corporal, Service No:VX84788) and Brothers-in-Law Walter Robert Gardiner (Leading Aircraftman, Service No:128283) and Albert Arthur Weir (Private, Service Nos:V275444/VX82332) also served in WWII.
In 1944 Bill was working as a Labourer in Doncaster, Victoria when he married Stella Lillian Smith (born 1917 in Dandenong, Victoria). Stella was working as a Dressmaker in Melbourne, Victoria and she and Bill lived in Doncaster where Bill continued working as a Labourer. In the early 1950s Bill and Stella moved to Childers in Baw Baw, Victoria where Bill was a Dairy Farmer until his death in 1987. Stella died in 1995.
