Al deployed to 1 ARU on 26 November 1968 and served with that unit until 14 December. He was then transferred to 1 RAR, where he served with them until they returned to Australia.

He joined 6 Section 8 Platoon Charlie Company, serving as a forward scout on 5 February 1969. He continued in that position until he was returned to Australia, on 19 November 1969, when his tour was completed.

He was widely known in Charlie Company as ‘the wild red-headed Canadian’. - Gary Townsend
