Jim loved sailing and had a heart attack on board Pibrock, a yacht belonging to Dr. Peter Fox of Timboon. He was sailing to visit his sister at Dongara, Western Australia,for the first time in many years. Unfortunately he passed away before seeing her, at the Fremantle Yacht Club, despite the efforts of his friend, Dr Fox.
Jim's wife was Phyllis and he had two children
