Arthur was the second of ten children of William Newbery Swann (born 1869 in Cheshire, England) and Sarah Jane Stevenson (born 1886 in Brisbane, QLD). William - a House Painter - married Sarah in Toowoomba, QLD in 1905. William and Sarah moved around the Darling Downs region (Pechey, Crows Nest, Kooralbin, Warwick, Toowoomba), where William worked as a House Painter, Engineer, Engine Driver and Labourer. He died at Millmerrin on the Darling Downs in 1927.
Arthur worked as a Labourer, Axeman and Farm Hand in Millmerran and Esk before moving to Coolangatta where he worked as a Garage Assistant and Truck Driver. In 1936 Arthur married Mary Ada Florence Smith (born 1915 in Brisbane, QLD) in Coolangatta, QLD. In 1937 Arthur enlisted in the CMF, serving for several months as a Private (Service No:127856) with 15/26 Infantry Battalion.
Arthur enlisted in the RAAF in July 1941 as a Guard (Service No:43461). He was a Leading Aircraftman and Corporal with 24 Squadron and RAAF Station Nowra and was Discharged in November 1945. Brothers Samuel William (Service No:QX104009), Albert James Daniel (Service No:Q104009) and Edmund Joseph (Service No:QX16907), and Brothers-in-Law Keith George Oliver (Service No:QX52167) and Alfred Mansfield Holloway (Service Nos:Q66175/Q122233/QX39483) also served in WWII.
Arthur and Mary settled in Brisbane, QLD following his Discharge, and Arthur had long periods of unemployment. In the mid 1960s the family moved to Millmerrin on the Darling Downs where Arthur worked as a Labourer, He died in 1972 and Mary in 1995.
