Ron was the eldest of four children of Richard (Nat) Nathaniel Austin (born 1899 in Selbourne, Tasmania) and Gladys May Dobie (born 1902 in Beaconsfield, Tasmania). Nat was a Labourer in 1922 when he married Gladys in Launceston, Tasmania. Nat and Gladys lived in Cormistion, Wilmot Tasmania where Nat worked as a Labourer before moving to Launceston. Nat was a Labourer and Contractor.

Ron was a Carpenter when he enlisted in the Australian Army in September 1942. He served as a Private (Service Nos:T34921/TX71992)with 2/12 Infantry Battalion. Ron was Discharged in February 1946. Father Nat (ACMF; Private; Service No:T21331), sister Aileen Dawn (Private, Service No:TF150180) and Brothers-in-Law Frederick Whish-Wilson (Sapper; Service No:T6595), Cosmo Whish-Wilson (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:88087), and Ronald Terry (Private; Service Nos:TX12978/T42294) served in WWII.

Ron returned to Launceston and was working as a Carpenter in the mid 1950s when he married Textile Worker Betty Frances Whish-Wilson (born 1920 in Smithton, Tasmania). Ron and Betty lived at Wilmot, Tasmania where Ron worked as a Wood Machinist. Ron died in 2010 and Betty in 2009.
