Lindsay was the eldest of three children of Arthur Ernest Slatyer (born 1885 in Goulburn, NSW) and Ada Alice Bell (born 1880 in Grenfell, NSW). Arthur was a Shopkeeper in Grenfell in 1908 when he married Ada in Cowra, NSW. During the Depression the family relocated to Meadowbank in Sydney, NSW where Arthur worked as a Shop Assistant.
Lindsay attended Newington College (1924 - 1928) and then worked in the family store in Grenfell. He was a keen cricketer and tennis player, and in the late 1920s moved to Sydney with his parents and siblings. He was a Salesman for Gowing Bros Ltd in Sydney, NSW in 1933 when he married Ethel Maude Bickford (born 1913 in Sydney, NSW).
In 1939 Lindsay was a Buyer/Salesman for Gowings when he enlisted in the AMF as a Private (Service No: 4555439) and was a Corporal attached to Australian Army Ordnance Corps when he received an Exemption and was Discharged in March 1941. By September 1942 Lindsay was a Departmental Manager with Gowings when he enlisted in the Australian Army. He saw service in New Guinea and was a Warrant Officer Class II (Service Nos:NX115746/N176481) attached to 13th Australian Mobile Laundry and Forward Decontamination Unit when he was Discharged in April 1945. His Father-in-Law (Ernest John Bickford) and four Brothers-in-Law served in WWI, and five Brothers-in-Law served in WWII.
Following the War, Lindsay and Ethel remained in Sydney, NSW where Lindsay was a Departmental Manager. He died in 1972 and Ethel in 1993.
