Claude was the eldest of five children of Claude Henry Augustus Wing (born 1880 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Lucy Ethel Conwell Aldred (born 1884 in Lilydale, Tasmania). Claude Snr, a Labourer, married Lucy in 1905 in Scottsdale, Tasmania. By the late 1920s Claude Snr was a Farmer at Jetsonville in Scottsdale, Tasmania.

In 1928 Claude was a Farmhand at Scottdale when he enlisted in the Militia (Trooper; Service No:Ve/231556), and was attached to 22nd Light Horse when he was Discharged in January 1933. Two brothers and a brother-in-law also served with the Militia during that period.

In 1941 Claude was a Labourer at Scottsdale when he enlisted in the ACMF. He served as a Corporal (Service No:T42255) with 6 Field Regiment and was a Gunner attached to 6 Garrison Battalion when he was Discharged in February 1944.

Claude married Bertha Susan Dalbey (born 1921 in Lilydale, Tasmania) in 1948 in Scottsdale, Tasmania. Claude and Bertha lived in Jetsonville, where Claude was a Labourer, before moving to Bridport and then Launceston, where Claude was a House Painter. Claude died in 1992 and Bertha in 2005.
