Alan was the youngest of three children of Frank Cecil Coates (b1884 in Sydney, NSW) and Clara May King (b1887 in Sydney, NSW). Frank (a Dentist) and Clara married in 1907 in Sydney, NSW where they settled and raised their family.
Alan had worked as a Shop Assistant (Electrical Fitters) in Sydney and was a Casual Labourer when he enlisted in the RAN in January 1937 (Service No:21351). He served as a Stoker and Chief Petty Officer Mechanic on a number of ships - including Cerberus, Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne and Moreton. In 1939 in Sydney, NSW Alan married Lorna Rose Nolan (b1913 in Montumana, Tasmania). Alan and Lorna were in Tarragindi, QLD when he was Discharged in 1949.
Alan was awarded diverse Trade Certificates/Licences including Steam Engine Driver (1949) and Electrical Contractor (1955). By the mid 1950s Alan and Lorna had settled in Penguin, Tasmania where Alan worked as an Attendant and Electrical Mechanic. The couple retired to NSW where Lorna died in Mudgee in 1989 and Alan in Warren in 1998.
