Vernon was the third of six children of William Anthony Baynes (born 1854 in London, England) and Jane Elizabeth Davies Edwards (born 1854 in London, England). Vernon - a Commercial Traveller for the Coal Trade - and Jane - a Pupil Teacher - married in London in 1876. They settled in Essex to raise their family, and William continued to work as a Commercial Traveller in the Coal Trade.
In 1911 Vernon was a Labourer when he arrived in Brisbane, QLD on board the Osterley. He worked at Beaudesert as a Timber Mill Labourer before returning to England where he served in WWI as 2nd Lieutenant (Regimental No:3709) with 28 London Regiment.
Vernon married Isabelle (Belle) Emily Marguerite Schmidt (born 1893 in Noumea, New Caledonia) in 1922 in Noumea. The couple settled in Sydney, NSW where Vernon worked as a Travelling Salesman and Stationer. In April 1942 he enlisted with the ACMF and served as a Gunner (Service No:N230145) with 9 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps. He was Discharged in April 1944. Sons Vernon Roger (Bombardier; Service No:N272934) and Robert William (Able Seaman; Service No:24974), Son-in-Law Albert McIntosh McDonald (Trooper; Service No:VX46377) and Grandsons Ken (Private; Service No:N171075) and Vernon (Lieutenant; Service No:NX70454) also served in WWII.
Vernon and Belle lived in Maroubra, where Vernon was a Manager. He died in 1958 and Belle in 1982.
