Alastair was the son of John (Jack) Edward Howe (born 1888) and Helen (Nellie) Urquhart Munro (born 1892 in Scotland). Jack and Helen (a Student Teacher) married in 1919 in Scotland and moved to Canada where their son was born in 1922. Jack was an Electrician in Sydney, NSW when Nellie and Alastair joined him in 1927.
Alastair attended St Joseph's College at Hunter's Hill before studying at the Marconi School of Wireless in Sydney. He gained his Pilot's licence through Airflite Pty Ltd in Camden and had completed 20 hours dual and 10 hours solo when he enlisted in the RAAF in February 1941. He was a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:403558) and embarked from Sydney NSW in July 1941 bound for Canada where he was attached to the Royal Canadian Airforce in Vancouver until April 1942. He was Discharged (Medically Unfit) in August 1942.
Alastair worked as a Clerk in Hobart, Tasmania in the early 1950s and had returned to Sydney when he married Nurse Janette Rosemary Ludowici (born 1930 in Sydney, NSW) in the late 1950s. Alastair and Janette settled in Sydney where he worked as a Clerk and Janette as a Teacher before retiring to Port Stephens. Alastair died in 2014 and Janette in 2019.
