Edith was the youngest of five children of Rhyce Hill (born 1883 in Durham, England) and Catherine (Kate) Mary Rawling (born 1894 in Durham, England). Rhyce worked as an Ironworks Labourer in Durham before enlisting in the British Army where he served in India (1911) as a Private (Regimental No:641). In 1913 Rhyce and Kate married in Durham and Rhyce served with the British Army's Durham Light Infantry as a Private (Regimental No:8964) in France. In 1924 Rhyce (a Farm Hand) and Kate, with two of their children, immigrated to Fremantle, Western Australia on board the Jervis Bay. They were Settlers at Cowarumup in southern Western Australia before moving to Perth in the late 1930s. Rhyce was a Labourer when he enlisted in the ACMF in 1939 - he served as a Warrant Officer II with 10th and 29th Garrison Battalions.
Edith, born in Busselton in December 1924, was working as a Clerk in Perth WA when she enlisted in the Australian Army Women's Service (AAWS) in 1943.
