Rhyce was the fourth of eight children of James Hill (born 1850 in Glamorgan, Wales) and Elizabeth Thomas (born 1856 in Glamorgan, Wales). James (an Ironworks Puddler) and Elizabeth married in 1872 in Glamorgan, Wales, where they lived until moving to Durham in 1882. James worked as an Ironworks Puddler in Stockton-on-Tees in Durham.
Rhyce was working as an Ironworks Puddler in Durham when he enlisted in the British Army, serving in India in 1911 (Private; Regimental No:641). He married Catherine (Kate) Mary Rawling (born 1884 in Durham, England) in 1913 and served with Durham Light Infantry (Private; Regimental No:8964) in France in WWI.
In 1924 Rhyce (a Farm Hand) and Kate immigrated with two of their children, arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia in March on board the Jervis Bay. The family moved to Cowarumup, WA where Rhyce was a Settler before relocating to Perth, WA in the mid 1930s.
Rhyce was a Labourer in Perth, WA when he enlisted in the ACMF in October 1939. He served as a Warrant Officer II (Service No:W242822) with 10th and 29th Garrison Battalions and was Discharged on 10 May 1944. Son Rhyce Jnr (Private/Sergeant; Service Nos:W4344/WX34347), Daughter Edith Louise (Corporal; WF94080) and Sons-in-Law Joseph Stephen (Private; Service No:WX10040) and Aloysius Edward Brennan (Driver; Service No:WX11873) also served in WWII.
Rhyce and Katie remained in Perth, WA where Rhyce worked as a Labourer (Packer). Kate died in 1966 and Rhyce in 1970.
