Biography

Son of David West BARNES and Charlotte nee HANTON

Joseph Thomas Barnes was a school teacher from Payneham, South Australia who was married to Muriel Thirza with one child.. He enlisted for service in the later stages of the war as reinforcements for the 27th battalion but was later transferred to the 48th battalion. Joseph was only to serve in this battalion from 4/4/18 until he was wounded on 3/5/18. His battalion was in action at Monument farm near Villers Bretonneux. Barnes recieved a gun shot wound to his left thigh and was evacuated from the battlefield. The wound was serious enough for him to be sent to England and Ireland to recover. Whilst returning from Ireland Joseph Barnes' troop ship the HMT Leinster was attacked by a German U Boat and sunk with 500 souls lost as a result.

RMS Leinster was a vessel operated by the City of Dublin Steam Packet Company, served as the Kingstown-Holyhead mailboat until she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-123 on 10 October 1918, while bound for Holyhead
