Edward was the eldest of five children of Richard Henry Ambrose (born 1867 in Toowoomba, QLD) and Catherine Cotter (born 1865 in Ipswich, QLD). The family moved to Maryborough, QLD in the late 1890's, where Richard was a Mechanic.
Edward trained initially as an apprentice Joiner in Toowoomba, QLD, and was a Fireman with QLD Government Railways when he enlisted in Brisbane, QLD in the AIF in 1915. He had been in the Wide Bay Infantry for 9 months.
On 31 June 1919, Edward was 'Brought to the notice of the Secretary of Styate for War for valuable services rendered'. He was awarded 2 blue chevrons on 9 April 1917.
Following his Discharge in 1919, Edward lived in Maryborough, QLD and worked as a Fireman for QLD Governemtn Railways. In 1923 he married Gladys Eveline Paesch (born 1896 in Maryborough, QLD), and by 1928 Edward was employed by QGR as a Locomotive Engine Driver in Mareeba, QLD. In the mid 1940's the family moved to Ipswich, QLD where Edward continued working as a Locomotive Engine Driver until his death in 1951
