Biography contributed by Elsa Reuter

WALL Arthur Frederick 339 L/SGT
2nd Machine Gun Battalion
1893-1985

Arthur was 23, when he enlisted in June 1916. He and his younger brother Ralph survived the war, not like their unfortunate cousins Bert, John and Roger. Arthur was the third son of farmer Samuel and his wife Sarah from Molka.

Arthur was drafted into the 2nd Machine Gun Battalion. Two months after enlistment he embarked on HMAT Orontes. Arriving in England in November Arthur was sent to Parkhouse Camp for training. The following year he saw action on the Sommes interspersed with trips to hospital suffering from cellulitis and impetigo. He was promoted twice in 1918 to LCPL and CPL, then finally in March 1919 to LSGT.

In July 1919 Arthur left England for return to Australia; on 4 October he was discharged.

He returned home to farm life and in 1926 married Florence Adelaide Jones.  They settled on a farm at Katandra and raised a son Keith, and a daughter Merle. Later on they moved to Shepparton where Arthur carted fruits shells from the cannery. These were used for surfacing paths and drives instead of gravel.

When Arthur retired he and Florence moved into Tarcoola Village. Arthur fell and broke his hip and died in 1985. Florence died in 1991.  They are both buried in the Pine Lodge Cemetery.
