Geoff is one of nine children of Hubert Reginald Sobey and Myrtle Isabella nee Irish. Geoff attended Ascot State School and North Ballarat Technical School, Vic. He worked on the family farm "Allowah", Ascot, Vic. Geoff entered National Service in 1965. He trained at Puckapunyal, Vic., Canungra, Qld., Mount Tamborine, Qld. October 1966 Geoff flew to Vietnam attached to 5th RAR, D. Company, 10th Platoon, as a Forward Scout. Discharge came on 28th Sep 1967 after 211 days abroad.
