Father LANSDOWN, Pte. Walter James, 2411. 4th Australian Pioneers. Died of sickness 5th March, 1917. Age 46.
10519 Driver Walter Oldway Lansdown, 3rd Divisional Train, Australian Army Service Corps, died of wounds on the 20 June 1917. Walter the younger had enlisted in September 1915, and served in France from November 1916, until he was shockingly wounded in June 1917, with gunshot and or shrapnel wounds to his left leg, which was fractured, also shrapnel in his other leg, back, and shoulder, and he died later the same day in a Casualty clearing station. He was wounded at the Nieppe Chateau, Armentieres, and 10518 Private R.W. Johnston stated that “we put up a large tombstone for him, as he was a great favorite.” 11272 Corporal A.E. Sergeant stated that “the same shell killed 26 horses in the grounds of the Chateau and that “Stable” (Lansdown) had just been dismissed when he said “Oh I’ll give my pair an extra touch up” and returned to the horse lines, he was the only one killed and was a jolly fine fellow.”
Walter was 24 years of age and is buried in the Trois-Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.
