While residing in England Fernley served in the British Navy for 8 years, having joined at the age of 13. He came to Australia in 1912 on the Ballarat. The British Census of 1911 listed Fernley as a 23 year old professional footballer playing for Plymouth Argyle.
Upon enlisting in the 1st A.I.F. Fernley was sent to Larkhill Camp in England for further training prior to going to France on 22 November 1915 with the 6 Division Signal Company. He continued to serve in France throughout the war as a sapper / mine layer.
Fernley returned to Australia on board the Raranga on 8 September 1919, disembarking on 25 October and was discharged on 19 December. He resumed working for Humes Ltd as a pipe layer. Fernley also worked for another returned soldier from Verdun, Ern Grivell, who had a market garden in the town. Ern’s son Don Grivell stated in an interview on 29 December 2011 that Fernley lost most of one hand in a concrete mixer accident in 1936 which prematurely ended his working life at the age of 49.
Fernley Burgoyne died at Gumeracha on 28 September 1963 aged 76.
