Captain Arthur Richard Haynes commenced service in 1911 with the Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC), and enlisted with the AIF (AAMC) on 21 November 1914. Captain Haynes embarked from Fremantle on 14 December 1914 on board HMAT Kyarra A55. Hospitalised with Enteric Fever in Malta, Captain Haynes then embarked for London on 12 October 1915 on board HS Assaye and was hospitalised at 3rd London General Hospital (Dysentry and Paratyphoid). Captain Haynes embarked from England for Fremantle on 29 January 1916 and his appointment was terminated on 6 February 1916. On 20 March 1926 Captain Haynes was appointed to the AAMC Home Service AIF.
Born in 1888 in Gunneday NSW, Arthur was the fourth of six children of Dr Edward (Ned) James Ambrose Haynes (b1854 in Maitland, NSW) and Theresa Margaret Mooney (b1852 at sea on board the Java en route for NSW). Ned (a Medical Practitioner) and Theresa married in 1876 in Sydney, NSW. Ned had commenced his medical studies at the Sydney Infirmary, and in 1886 in London was awarded membership of the Royal College of Surgeons and Licenciate of the Royal College of Physicians. Returning to NSW in 1887, Ned was in charge of the smallpox hospital in Manly and then appointed Government Doctor in Gunnedah - later serving as Mayor. By 1891 Ned and Theresa were settled in erth, WA where Ned was a Medical Practitioner, member of the Perth City Council and Captain with the WA Defence Forces - Perth Mounted Rifles.
Arthur completed his medical studies in 1910 at The University of Sydney - Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery - and took over his father's medical practice in Perth. In 1914 in Perth WA, Arthur married Irene Maria Frost (b1890 in Orange, NSW). Following his Discharge from the AIF, Arthur and Irene settled in Broome, where Arthur was the District Medical Officer and on occasion served as Resident Magistrate. In 1928 Irene died from burns suffered in an accident iwhen she was on holiday in Perth - eldest daughter Sheila was sent to Hong Kong where she lived with an Aunt and Uncle, and was interred at Stanley Camp during WWII. The younger children were cared for by their grandparents.
By 1941 Arthur was appointed as Medical Inspector of Seamen at Derby, WA and was a Medical Practitioner in Mt Margaret, WA in 1945 when he married second wife Olive Irene Edison (b1906 in Perth, WA) - Olive was a Nurse. In 1946 Arthur was appointed Quarantine Inspector at Wyndham, WA and was in Perth WA when he died in 1949. Olive died in 1975.
