William George Ray military record
William was wounded at Polygon Wood in 1917. He received a facial injury and lost an eye and was evacuated to England where he was cared for by a British nurse who he credits with saving his life. Rather than transfer home and discharge, he elected to join the medical corps where he served as an orderly until his return to Australia in 1919. He married that British nurse and she came home with him. He died in 1945 but he never allowed anyone to take his photo due to his facial injuries.
