Non Warlike Service

26 Feb 1951: Enlisted Royal Australian Air Force, A35104, RAAF Initial Training School, Joined 7 Aircrew Course at ITS RAAF Pt Cook. In August 1952 transferred to 7 Navigators Course at School of Air Navigation, RAAF East Sale.

Korean War Service

3 Mar 1953: Transferred Royal Australian Air Force, Sergeant, No. 36 Squadron (RAAF), On graduation from School of Air Navigation (East Sale)in Aug 1952, John was posted to 86 Wing at Richmond, NSW. He was then posted to 30 (transport) Unit at Iwakuni, Japan, on 3 March 1953, which reformed as 36 Sqn on 10 March 1953. He was a navigator on C-47 Dakotas in Japan and Korea until Nov 1953 when he returned to Australia. He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on 1 July 1953.
