Frederick Lisbon HOPKINS (Service Number 949) was born on 29th September 1892 at Maclean, NSW.. He commenced working for the NSW Tramways as a casual conductor in Sydney on 2nd April 1914. On 22nd August 1914 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces. He enlisted at Randwick on 28th August. He was unmarried and at first gave his father as his next of kin. This was changed to his mother upon her husband’s death.
Hopkins left Australia aboard HMAT ‘Afric’ on 18th October 1914.
He was promoted to Lance Corporal at Gallipoli on 20th June 1915.
He received a flesh wound to his thigh on 13th August 1915 and was evacuated to the Hospital Ship ‘Rewa’. He died of his wounds the next day and was buried at sea that day.
