Died on this date – 23rd March…… Henry Hunter Griffith was born at Albury, New South Wales on 28th August, 1887.
He was engaged to Miss Caroline Agnes Heary (Line) MacLeod, elder daughter of the late Mr A. M. Macleod in June, 1914.
Henry Hunter Griffith applied for a Commission in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 1st February, 1916. He was a Medical Practitioner, M.B., B.S., (Melbourne University) & was aged 28 years & 5 months.
On 26th February, 1916 Henry Hunter Griffith was appointed to the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.). He was a 30 year old, single, Medical Practitioner from Fort Lytton, Queensland.
Captain Henry Hunter Griffith was retained on Home Service from 26th February, 1916 to 16th November, 1917.
He was made Temporary Major from 17th November, 1917 & was granted the substantive rank of Major whilst engaged with No. 3 Transport Staff.
Major Henry Hunter Griffith embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on SS Indarra on 26th November, 1917 with the No. 3 Section, Sea Transport Staff & disembarked at Suez.
He embarked from Port Said on 9th January, 1918 on HMT Kashgar & disembarked at Taranto on 20th January, 1918. Major Griffith embarked from Cherbourg on 31st January, 1918 on HMT Mona’s Queen & disembarked at Southampton, England on 2nd February, 1918. Having arrived from Australia, Major Griffith was taken on strength of A.I.F. in England on 2nd February, 1918.
On 18th February, 1918 Major Griffith was attached to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, Wiltshire for duty from Army Medical Corps Details. He was detached from attached duty with 1st A.D.H., Bulford & was marched out to Administrative Headquarters, London on 1st March, 1918.
Major Henry Hunter Griffith was returned to Australia on 10th March, 1918 per Durham Castle as S.M.O. (Senior Medical Officer).
He made several trips back & forth between Australia & England as the Senior Medical Officer on Troopships.
On 13th March, 1919 Major Griffith was admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, London, England with Influenza. He was later reported to be dangerously ill.
Major Henry Hunter Griffith died at 8 pm on 23rd March, 1919 at 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, London, England from (1) Pneumonia, Myocardial Failure (2) Syncope.
He was buried on 27th March, 1919 in Paddington Cemetery, Kilburn, Greater London, England (now referred to as Paddington Old Cemetery) – Plot number 1 M. 14331 in Private Family Vault & has a shared Private Family Headstone.
Major Henry Hunter Griffith was the nephew of Sapper Charles Mackern Shirrefs (listed by Australian Imperial Force as Sheriff) (see headstone) & had attended his uncle’s funeral on 28th February, 1919.
[Major Henry Hunter Griffith’s younger brother Geoffrey Carmichael Griffith was Wounded in Action on 7th August, 1916. He died of wounds received in action at Pozieres on 9th August, 1916. Buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, France.
