An Original Anzac who served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
52 years ago today, on the 3rd August 1971, Private Harold Ernest Ashton, 2nd Battalion (Reg No-817), labourer from Maitland Road, Islington, New South Wales and 24 Lindsay Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. (1945) and "Buckland Chambers", 183 Liverpool Street, Sydney, N.S.W. (1967), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 76. ANGLICAN 1-77. 51. Not married.
Born at Islington, New South Wales on the 9th March 1895 to Thomas and Clara Maria Ashton, Harold enlisted on the 24th August 1914 at Randwick, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board Transport A23 Suffolk on the 18th October 1914.
Harold was invalided home on the 21st December 1915 (GSW left arm, enteric fever), being discharged on the 25th December 1915.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on the 22nd August 1916.
Admitted to hospital 18.7.1915 (influenza), 12.10.1916 (mumps), 4.12.1916 (swollen feet), 8.12.1916 (influenza), 3.1.1917 (pyrexia), 21.1.1917 (influenza), 27.2.1917 (oedema of feet or trench feet), 12.9.1918 (laryngitis and dysentery).
Wounded in action - 25/28.4.1915 (GSW arm).
Wounded accidently 22.9.1917 (bayonet wound, left hip, severe).
Invalided to England 27.9.1918.
Entitled to 1 Red Chevon (went overseas before 31st December 1914) and 3 Blue Chevrons (worn for each year’s service overseas) from the 11.11.1917.
Harold again returned home invalided on the 1st February 1919 (Special 1914 Leave), being discharged medically unfit (dysentery) on the 19th April 1919.
Mr. Ashton’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and the Newcastle 39th Fortress Company, Australian Engineers' Roll of Honour, whereabouts unknown. Name not inscribed on the Islington St. Mark's Anglican Church Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Harold’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
