Signalwoman Joyce Elizabeth Jane Sutherland (Service No:Vf397633) served with the AWAS from 22 April 1943 to 7 June 1946. Signalwoman Sutherland served with 2 Australian Signals Training Battalion and LHQ Signals.
Born in 1923 in Camperdown Victoria, Joyce was the daughter of Thomas Sutherland (b1887 at Numurkah nr Shepparton, Victoria) and Janie Dwyer (b1895 in Camperdown, Victoria). Thomas (a Labourer) and Janie married in 1916 in Camperdown, Victoria where they settled and raised their family and Thomas was a Labourer. In the 1940s Thomas and Janie moved to Geelong, where Thomas was a Greenkeeper.
Joyce worked in the Butter Factory and as a Saleswoman before enlisting in the AWAS in 1943. In the early 1950s, Joyce married Bernard Patrick Irvin (b1920 in Rose Park, South Australia) - Bernard served in the RAN (Service No:Pa1784). Joyce and Bernard settled in Geelong, Victoria where bernard worked as a Fitter until his death in 1964. Joyce died in 2004.
