Wilfred John Doudle was born on October 20th, 1898 in Coulta, South Australia, to parents William Doudle and Sarah Ellen Puckridge. Before enlisting for World War One, Wilfred lived in Coulta. He was about 1.7 metres tall with a small build prior to the First World War. He had dark brown hair, hazel eyes and was a member of The Church of England. Before the war, Wilfred worked as a motor driver. He grew up in a large family, his siblings being- Cecil Freeman, Raymond William, Wallace Freeman, Phillip Henry, Arthur Collin, Vincent Alec, Anthony Freeman, Hilda Mary and Florence Bertha.
On December 6th, 1916, Wilfred enlisted for World War One at the age of 18 years and one month. In June the next year, Wilfred departed Australia from Melbourne on board the HMAT Suevic A29. When he arrived at war, Wilfred was a private and served on the Western Front, working in the 8th Machine Gun Company in the 43rd Battalion.
About a year after he arrived, on June 6th, 1918, Wilfred was admitted to Southern General Hospital in Birmingham, England with conjunctivitis and suffering the effects of gas. A few months later on October 22nd, Wilfred was admitted to the 3rd Western General Hospital in Wales, suffering from gunshot wounds to his right arm, shoulder and leg. He was medically discharged from the army in the following year, and returned to Australia on the hospital ship, Wandilla. On March 31st, 1919, Wilfred arrived back in Australia and successfully recovered from his wounds.
When Wilfred arrived back in Australia, he, along with many other returning soldiers, received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He then went on to marry Allister Isabella Heath and have three children, Patricia, Richard and William.
On June 25th, 1974, Wilfred John Doudle passed away and was buried at Happy Valley Cemetery, Port Lincoln in the RSL section of the graveyard. There is a plaque in the Garden of Remembrance dedicated to him.
