Albert Emanuel (Bertie) Lee was born in Battersea, England on 17 Dec 1877, the son of Sergeant Thomas Lee (Royal Marine Artillery) and Charlotte Meakin.

His parents emmigrated to Australia with their other children in the late 1880s but Albert did not arrive until 1892 aged 14, he was possibly finishing his schooling in England.

His father Thomas Lee was the mess sergeant at Victoria Barracks, Paddington, NSW.

(The following is a transcript of Albert's father Thomas' obituary)

"MILITARY FUNERAL

A military funeral was accorded the remains of the late Mr. Thomas Lee, of the Victoria Barracks, Paddington, the interment being made at the Waverley Cemetery. The deceased gentleman, who was 63 years of age, was a soldier of many years, and won high esteem. At Liverpool. England, November, 1860, he enlisted with the Royal Marine Artillery, and served in the Imperial Army for 21 years. He also formed one of the Livingstone expedition, which, in the Valorous, went to Africa. Mr. Lee was awarded the long-service and good conduct medal in 1881, and, in May, 1891, he joined the New South Wales Royal Australian Artillery, having, since 1894, filled a responsible position at the Barracks. The funeral took place, on Thursday, the coffin covered by the Union Jack being borne on a gun-carriage. The services at the house and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. G. North-Ash, chaplain of the First Australian light Horse. The Police Band, under Senior-constable Nolan, preceded the guncarriage. The mourners were Messrs. Thomas, Bertie, and Arthur Lee. (sons), and D. McClure (son-in-law). Those present also included Major A. P. Luscombe, D.A.Q.M.G. (president of the officers' mess), Brigadier-General Finn (State Commandant) was represented by Lieutenant Macartney, A.D.C. Lieutenant and hon. Captain S. S. Ryrie, Bandmaster McCarthy, Band-sergeant Letherby, and representatives of the R.A.A. (under Lieutenant Brown), Submarine Miners, and others were also present. Captain R. L. H. B. Jenkins was the processional officer. The firing party consisted of 19 rank and file from No. 4 Company, R.A.A. Wreaths were forwarded by Mrs. Jones, Paddington, florist, for Major-General Sir Edward Hutton and Lady Hutton, Brigadier-General Finn and Mrs. Finn, officers of the headquarters' staff, No. 4 Company, R.A.A., Permanent Army Service Corps, Sergeants' mess, R.A.A., Colonel Stanley and officers, R.A.A., Australian Regt. Field Artillery, Lieutenant-Colonel Wells and officers, Captain and Mrs. Christian, Major, and Mrs. Luscombe, Gunners Laurence and Milson, N.C.O's and men No. 4 Company, Captain. and Mrs. Robertson, Captain andf-Mrs. Jenkins, Mr. Hodgkinson, Mr. T. Albert married Ethel Marion Hampshire in 1905, they lived in Arncliff.
