Biography contributed by Robert Wight

Allan Campbell, aged just 19, enlisted in the AIF at Ballarat West on 21 June 1915. He left Australia on 28 January 1916 and arrived in Egypt a month later. On 1 April 1916 he was transferred to the 58th Battalion. He arrived in France on 23 June 1916 and saw action for the first time at Fromelles, where he was wounded on 19 July 1916.

After re-joining his battalion, he was wounded a second time, in the front line near Flers, on 30 November 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in April 1917 and then to Corporal in June 1917. On 18 July 1917 he travelled to England where he was attached to the 15th (Brigade’s) Training Battalion at Hurdcott Camp in Wiltshire. He remained in a training role until 31 December 1917, when he returned to France and re-joined the 58th Battalion on 5 January 1918.

He saw further action during the German Spring Offensive during March – April 1918, and then during the Allied offensive from 8 August 1918. During one of the last actions for the AIF in the war, he was wounded for a third time on 29 September 1918 during the successful attack on the Hindenburg Line.

After recuperating from his wounds, he left England in January 1918 and arrived back in Australia, where he was discharged in Melbourne on 16 April 1919.
