Arthur was the second child of James William Rule Gliddon (b1856 in Cornwall, England) and Charlotte Jane Church (b1860 in Truro, South Australia). James arrived in South Australia in 1875 on board the Lady Jocelyn and he and Charlotte married in Adelaide in 1879. James was a Carrier and Teamster.
Arthur was a Labourer in Perth WA in 1911 when he married Harriet Jane Maddock (nee Smith; b1873 in Perth, WA). Harriet was a Divorcee, and Arthur raised her son Herbert with his own seven children.
In October 1915 Arthur enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:2028) with 14/10 Light Horse Regiment - he stated he had previously spent two years with the Blackwood Mounted Rifles in South Australia. Stepson Herbert (Herbie) also served in the AIF (Private; Service No:2097) and son Donald Walter (Sergeant; Service Nos:5131/WX30789) served in WWII.
Arthur returned to WA urgently in 1917 when Hannah drowned whilst swimming in the Swan River. He was Discharged in August 1917 and worked as a Labourer, Gardener and Plasterer in Perth and Dwellingup. Arthur remarried twice, and died in Dwellingup WA in 1962.
