Signaller Stanley "Titch" Carroll of the Signals Platoon of the 2/11th Battalion sailed for eight days single-handedly in a 16-foot Greek fishing boat 350 miles across the Mediterranean Sea from Crete to the Egyptian Coast near Mersah Mutrah in June 1941 to escape the Germans.
The information he provided resulted in the successful evacuation of other members of the Allies in HM Submarines Thrasher and Torbay in July and August 1941.
He was promoted to Sergeant and awarded the Military Medal.
