Mrs. E J Ahrens, of Ironbank, Upper Sturt, has been officially notified that her youngest son, Pte. Cecil Claude Ahrens, was killed on active service in France on August 16 last. The deceased, who was 19 years of age, enlisted from Gumeracha in November, 1915 and left for Egypt in the following March. He was highly respected by a large circle of friends.

Biography
Son of William AHRENS and Elizabeth Jane nee MORGAN
Killed at Mouquet Farm by Artillery Fire. Date of death is unknown, but possibly on the 13 August, as 50th Battalion only took roll on 16 August 1916 after they had being in the front line for four days.

Cecil Claude Aherns was born on March 19, 1897, in Upper Sturt, South Australia. He attended Scott's Creek Public School in South Australia. He practised the Methodist religion. His father was William Ahrens, and his mother was E J. Ahrens. Before the war he worked as a driver.
He enlisted on November 1st, 1915, and on March 9th, 1916, his unit sailed from Adelaide, South Australia, on board the RMS Mongolia. He was a private and served in the 74th Division of the Military Cadets prior to the war. During the war he fought with the 10th Infantry Battalion and then was transferred to the 50th Infantry Battalion.
On the 16th August 1916, at the Battle of Mouquet Farm, Pozieres, France Aherns was killed in action, aged 19 years.
