Wilfred’s unit, the 5th Machine Gun Battalion embarked from Melbourne on board RMS Orontes on 16 August 1916. Upon reaching England they were stationed at Camp No. 3 at Parkhouse prior to going to France on 22 December. Wilfred sustained a slight wound to his right leg when in action on 25 September 1917 but was able to rejoin his unit on 4 October. He continued fighting in France until the war’s end. Wilfred returned to Australia on the Ulysses on 23 July 1919 and was discharged on 16 October.

Steve Edward Robert Delchau

After the war Edward and Kathleen stayed in England until they returned to Australia with their daughter Bessie in September 1919 on board the Dunvegan Castle. Edward was discharged on 13 October 1919. Their other children – Phoebe, Edward, Barbara, Lorna, Allen and Margaret were all born at Balhannah between 1920 and 1939.
Edward died on 18 June 1971 and Kathleen on 20 October 1974. Both are buried at the West Terrace Cemetery.
