Son of George Vile and Lydia Ann Vile nee Shaw of Paget Street, Croydon, SA. Brother of Edward James Vile who returned to Australia on 15 May 1919 having served with the 10th Battalion

Commenced return to Australia on 9 December 1918 aboard HT Argyllshire disembarking on 1 February 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Adelaide.

On 20 November 1905 George married Mary Horgan in the Methodist Parsonage, Hawker, SA.
