2nd/4th Armoured Regiment
2nd/4th Armoured Regiment was formed in October 1942 at Wee Waa in NSW, to round out the 2nd Armoured Brigade Group.
They were based successively at Narrabri (NSW) and then Murgon (Qld) in 1942/3 before concentrating at Southport in January 1944 where they were assigned to the 4th Armoured Brigade Group.
They were equipped with the British designed Matilda Medium Tank (although it was relatively lightly armed with a 2pdr / 37mm gun.
In August 1944 they moved in support of the 5th Infantry Division which had been a militia based formation, to Madang in New Guinea.
They took part, generally as Squadrons detached in support of 5th and 6th Infantry Division units in the Wewak Aitape campaign. (/explore/campaigns/105) C Squadron wsupported the 6th Division in attacks at Hawain River, Wewak and Wirui Mission towards the end of the war.
B Squadron was moved to Bougainville to join the 2nd Australian Corps Group there in March 1945, and fought at Toakina and in support of the 25th Battalion at Slater's Knoll, and then supporting the 15th Briagde in th advance to Mivo River.
They were later joined by A Squadron and Regimental HQ for the final stages of the Bougainville campaign.
