Walrus Mk I Seaplane L2177 on approach to HMAS Sydney for recovery by the ship's crane in late 1941, somewhere in Australian Waters, possibly off South Australia. This photo shows Ray Barrey in the cockpit taxing the Aircraft, while the Naval Observer Jack Bacon RN assists the Aircrews TAG sitting on the top wing waiting for the crane to lower the hook which he had to catch and hook up to the wing so it could then be winched onboard. In view on the deck of HMAS Sydney is a Carley Float in its stowed position, while Looking on are a RAN Petty Officer and a RAAF Member of the crew. It is believed that this Photo was taken by LAC Keith Homard RAAF, who was a former Newcastle Press Photographer now part of HMAS Sydney's RAAF Detachment as the Reconnaissance Photograph Section's Commander.

An 8 inch MkVI Howitzer of the 1st Australian Siege Battery (aka 54th Siege Battery) at full recoil after firing one of its 90kg/200lb shells, up to a maximum range of 12,300yds / 11.2km. Note that the cut-out in its 'box trail' accommodates the full length recoil. The box or sometimes a split trail, allows maximum elevation and full recoil of the breech / barrel assembly on firing and is a defining feature of howitzers. These images were taken by renowned photographers Frank Hurley and George (later Sir Hubert) Wilkins. See the video link in the sidebar.

When the Boarding Party from HMAS Sydney reached the beached Emden, to recover the dead and wounded, they also recovered the Captain's safe, containing the ships imprest of funds for procuring fuel rations and so on . 6,429 Mexican Silver 8 Reales were found. One thousand of those coins were given to William Kerr jewellers, with the company commissioned to produce the Sydney-Emden Medal. Adorning each Mexican silver dollar with the King’s Crown in unison with superb scrolls, the jewellers created one of the most memorable decorations in military history.

Lyall Klaffer and his US Air Force Navigator after returning from a mission over Hanoi in his beloved F4 Phantom
Portrait of Flying Officer (FO) Lyall Klaffer of Adelaide, SA, who has been recalled from 78 Fighter Wing RAAF in Malta to become aide-de-camp (ADC) to Australia's new Governor General, Field Marshal Sir William Joseph Slim (in office 8 May 1953-2 February 1960). FO Klaffer won an American DFC while flying with 77 Squadron RAAF in Korea. He is shown with his favourite Vampire jet fighter shortly before returning to Australia. The Wing is in Malta for garrison duty.
