Pte Nash, of Victoria, Australia served with A Company. He died on 24 July 1916, aged 21, of wounds received in the Australian charge at Fleurbaix during 19 - 23 July 1916. In this action, which formed part of the Battle of the Somme, (Ed note: this is not technically correct - the Somme is much further south) Australian troops attempted to advance but were pinned down by German forces located behind them as well as in front of them. Cut off, they charged the German lines in an attempt to return to their original point of advance.

Nieppe, France. 18 April 1918. A Company Headquarters of the 7th Battalion, established in an old shooting box in the Forest of Neippe, in Northern France. A week earlier on the arrival of the 1st Division at Hazebrouck from the Somme, the Germans were already commencing to penetrate the Forest of Nieppe immediately east of the town. The 7th Battalion, with some of the 1st Pioneer Battalion and a company of machine gunners, pushed through Nieppe Forest, north of La Motte Chateau, and dug in on the north-eastern edge, in touch with the British rearguards. The Australian line, when completed, ran down from Strazeele to the Wood, where it linked up with the British Guards and the 29th Division. The Germans attacked in force on the 14th, but were repulsed; they renewed the attack in the evening, but failed. They never attacked again on these positions.
Soldiers of the 2nd/27th Battalion, cut off from the Brigade withdrawal from Mission Ridge, finally regain touch with their colleagues after almost two weeks with very little food. They brought in the wounded of the their own and two other Battalions of the 21st Brigade.
The Australians of the 16th Brigade assemble near Eora Creek in the Owen Stanley Ranges for an attack on Japanese positions near Kokoda. These men at least have Bren Guns, but supply problems thwarted the attempt to retake Kokoda and instead the epic defence of Isurava was conducted.

I could see no chance of getting back home as I often heard the noise of the guns coming nearer and nearer after us.
