The three enlisted children of Robert John Ahern and Sarah Agnes (née Campbell) Ahern of Alderley, Queensland:-
6457 Pte. William Henry Ahern (/explore/people/309772) - returned to Australia;
1382 Dvr. Robert George Ahern (/explore/people/110506) - returned to Australia;
5529 Pte. Archibald Ahern - killed in action.
'Archibald Ahern was born in Blackall, Central Western Queensland. When he enlisted in Townsville, Northern Queensland on the 18th October, 1915, he was 24 years and 6 months of age.
His record lists his occupation as a ‘stockman’ and his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Agnes Ahern as living at 38 Misterton St, Valley, Brisbane, Queensland.
Archibald embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on the 7th September 1916 on the ship, “Clan MacGillivray” arriving in Plymouth, England on the 2nd November 1916.
His skills as a stockman and dealing with horses must have stood him in ‘good stead’ as he was trained in England as ‘cold shoer’ at the SC School of Farriery at Romsey, Hampshire, England.
On the 24th April, 1917 Archibald Ahern travelled to France to serve on what was known as ‘The Western Front’ marching into the front, he arrived on the 2nd May 1917.' READ MORE (discoveringanzacs.naa.gov.au)
