Enlisted in AIF on 10 Sept 1915. Trained at Liverpool, NSW. Embarked on 20 Dec 1915 for Tel-El-Kebir, Egypt. Alloted to the 54th Battalion on 16 Feb 1916. On 19 July 1916 took part in the battle of Fromelles where he received a gun shot wound to the face and remained in no mans land until the next day. On the 21st he was admitted to 8th stationary hospital in Wimereux, France. Promoted to Corporal on 2 Aug 1916. Upon discharge from hospital Ren rejoined the 54th in Etaples on 15 Sept 1916. During Feb & March 1917 took part in the Hindenburg line defensive, during which he was made a Sergeant. On 15 May 1917 was transferred to Div Rest station due to exhaustion. Rejoined unit on 1 June 1917. On 24 July 1917 marched into 14th training battalion Hurdcott from France. Rejoined 54th battalion in France on 22 Nov 1917. On leave in England from 3 Feb 1918 to 21 Feb 1918. Admitted to 1st Aux hospital, Harefield and is discharged on 22 Oct 1918. On Christmas Day in 1918 Ren marries English girl Annie Watcham in Leicester. At the end of January 1919 Ren returns to France and is detatched to a salvage party in Jeumont. On 8 Aug 1919 he embarks for Australia aboard H T Katoomba. Ren disembarks in Sydney on 25 Sept 1919 and returns home to Karuah.
