Served in The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
56 years ago today, on the 26th June 1964, Private Sam Earnshaw, 5th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery, miner from Carrington Street, West Wallsend, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 74. ANGLICAN 1-21. 104.
Born at Keiraville, New South Wales on the 6th June 1890 to David and Christina Maria Earnshaw of 19 Gerber Street, Alexandria, New South Wales and 19 McCauley Street, Alexandria, N.S.W.; husband of Mary Earnshaw nee Brierley (married 1921, died 1961, Wallsend, N.S.W.), Sam enlisted December 1915 with the 35th Battalion at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 12.3.1917 (trench feet), Mr Earnshaw returned home July 1919, discharged August 1919.
Sam’s name has been inscribed on the West Wallsend and District Soldier's Memorial. (photos).
Mr Earnshaw had been resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so November 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Older brother Ben (Reg No-180, 20th Battalion, born 1881, died 1954, Campsie, N.S.W.) also served 1st A.I.F.
