Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 9th June 1917, Private Thomas Ayliffe, 35th Battalion (Reg No-353), miner from Heddon Greta, New South Wales, Died of Wounds at No.2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Battle of Messines, Belgium, age 22 years 6 months.
No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Tighes Hill, New South Wales on the 3rd December 1895 to Thomas (died 7.9.1943, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 77), and Emily Ayliffe nee Campbell (died 10.10.1952, Maitland Hospital, N.S.W., age 79, mother of 5) of St Andrew Street, West Maitland, New South Wales, Tom enlisted on the 29th November 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Wounded in action - 9.6.1917 (GSW arm, head, back).
Mother Emily's brother Private Samuel Campbell, miner from Rawson Street, Kurri Kurri, New South Wales, 35th Battalion, Reg No-745, had been KIA on the 23rd June 1917.
Mr. Ayliffe is resting at Trois-Abres Cemetery, Steenwerck, France. Plot I Row S Grave 6.

Tom’s name has been inscribed on the Heddon Greta Honor Board, Kurri Kurri War Memorial, Kurri Kurri Superior Public School Roll of Honour and the Book of Gold.
Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription on the headstone plaque for the Ayliffe family to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of Tom’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-39. 89.
