The Wagga Daily Advertiser reported on Monday 11 August 1947 that the death had occurred on Saturday August 9 of Mr Jim Byrne S.M. at the Parramatta Hospital after a long illness.
A long serving officer of the Department of Justice, he was well known in the Riverina and had been stationed at Temora and Wagga. Recently he was appointed police magistrate at Parramatta, where he lived, having previously worked in Newcastle.
An old Digger of World War I, he was a sergeant with the 56th Battalion, A.I.F. He also served during World War II in the Voluntary Defence Corps, 17th Battalion, gaining the rank of lieutenant. His staunch work for all patriotic causes was shared by his wife, Mrs Gladys Byrne, who was a member of the Hathaway Club – a Wagga based group providing humanitarian support during and after World War II.
Meanwhile in Newcastle Court, Mr. C. G. Carr-Boyd, S.M. referred to the death of Mr. Byrne S.M. Mr. Carr-Boyd said that the late Mr Byrne had given assistance in the Court at Newcastle over the past years. Mr. Byrne was a member of a distinguished family, and his passing was deeply regretted. He added that the late Mr. Byrne had suffered greatly for many months and was forced to enter hospital recently. Mr. H. L. O'Neill (for the legal profession) said they had lost a friend, a very fine magistrate and an excellent Australian. Sergeant E. G. King spoke in support on behalf of the Police.
James Byrne was survived by his widow and four sisters. His brother John predeceased him in 1937.
