Died on this date – 26th April…… Karl Marseus Nielsen was born at Dronninglund, Denmark around 1887.
On 19th June, 1914 Karl Nielsen received a Certificate from the Royal Norwegian Consulate Sydney, NSW certifying that he had been discharged from the Norweigan Ship _ordstern. He was listed as a 27 year old, Able Seaman (AB), born Denmark & his character was listed as very Good. The date of engagement was listed as 20th February, 1912.
Karl Nielsen enlisted at Goulburn, NSW in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 1st May, 1916 as a 29 year old, single, Sailor from Moss Vale, NSW.
He embarked from Sydney, NSW, with a Service number of 2114, on HMAT Anchises (A68) on 24th August, 1916 with the 9th Infantry Brigade, 35th Infantry Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements & disembarked at Devonport, England on 11th October, 1916.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
Private Nielsen was awarded 3 days Field Punishment No. 2 & forfeited 4 days’ pay for being Absent without Leave for 1 day (date not recorded).
He proceeded overseas to France via Southampton on 21st November, 1916.
On 18th January, 1917 Private Nielsen was transferred to 9th Machine Gun Company from 35th Battalion.
Private Karl Nielsen was wounded in action on 7th June, 1917. He was admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance with gunshot wounds to back then transferred the same day to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station. Private Nielsen was admitted to 26th General Hospital at Etaples, France on 8th June, 1917. He was transferred to 6th Convalescent Depot at Etaples on 1st August, 1917 then transferred to 5th Convalescent Depot at Etaples on 25th September, 1917. Private Nielsen was discharged to Base from 5th Convalescent Depot on 11th October, 1917. He re-joined 3rd Machine Gun Battalion from being wounded on 8th November, 1917.
He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 11th November, 1917.
Lance Corporal Nielsen was on leave to England from 31st January, 1918 & returned from leave on 16th February, 1918. He rejoined his Unit from a Course on 23rd March, 1918.
Lance Corporal Karl Nielsen was wounded in action – gassed on 17th April, 1918. He was admitted to 55th Field Ambulance on 17th April, 1918 then transferred & admitted to 9th General Hospital at Rouen, France on 19th April, 1918. Lance Corporal Nielsen was invalided to England on Hospital Ship West Australian on 21st April, 1918.
He was admitted to Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich, Norfolk, England on 22nd April, 1918 with Gas Poisoning (Shell).
Lance Corporal Karl Nielsen died at 6.30 pm on 26th April, 1918 at Norfolk War Hospital, Norwich, Norfolk, England Gas Poisoning with Shell Gas, received in action & Broncho Pneumonia.
He was buried in Earlham Road Cemetery, Norwich, Norfolk, England where 23 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
