John Henry Ferguson Brisbin was born on 3 July 1886 at Capella, Queensland. His parents were John & Anne Brisbin (Brisbane) originally of Tyrone, Northern Ireland. His parents arrived and settled in Queensland 6 June 1879. Initially his father worked on the railway line between Clermont and Emerald. Later his father was employed at the Mt Morgan Mine becoming the Furnaces Boss and the family was raised there.
John H F Brisbin was a stockman in Central Queensland and was known as 'Jack'. He was one of three of the Brisbin family that joined and served in the Great War (WW1) along with 2394 Pte. William Richard Brisbin (/explore/people/169378) (/explore/people/169378) who returned from active service and 785 Pte. Lowry McClelland Brisbin (/explore/people/375584) (/explore/people/375584) who was killed in action at the landing at Gallipoli.
John married Ellen Jane Wright in Longreach on 6 September 1915 and had two children named Q31567 Pte. John Edward Valentine Brisbin (/explore/people/668109) (/explore/people/668109) (23/6/1920) and Q131010 Pte. James Edward (Eddie) Brisbin (/explore/people/668108) (/explore/people/668108) 1/5/1923 who both served in WWII.
He enlisted at Mt Morgan for WWII on 6 October 1915 and went to camp at Enoggera where he was attached to the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column (DAC) 1st Field Artillery Brigade, as a Gunner. He subsequently sailed for England on 31 January 1916 on board HMAT A62 Wandilla, and completed his training at Salisbury Plains. He went straight to the firing line and into action. He was dangerously wounded and gassed in November 1917 and sent to hospital in England. Recovering he was sent back to France and was in action through Hamel, Amiens and Villers Brettonex. When the armistice was signed he went with the Army of Occupation at Brussels. Discharged on 6 August 1919 he was subsequently issued with the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
He spent his later years in residence in Longreach as did his sons John Edward Brisbin and James Edward (Eddie) Brisbin.
He never really recovered from the gassing and passed away in Longreach on 12 June 1969.

Died at age 87 years in 1969 and buried in Longreach Cemetery identified by grave marker 1805 in Section 6 Row 14.
His wife Ellen died in 1976 and was buried with him. Her grave marker is 1950.
Their two sons, who served in WWII, are buried in the lawn Cemetery adjacent to their graves.
