Alan Barling Lush had a long history of military service having served in the First Matabele War (1893), the South African (Boer) War, and serving twice in WW1.
He noted on his WW1 Attestation Papers under previous service that he had first served in the First Matabele War in the British South Africa (Company) Police force during which he was wounded in 1893 after which he made his way to Australia. In 1894 he married Pheodora Jones in Sydney and between 1895 and 1899 he was located at Clermont Qld working as a gold prospector.
His second service would be as a Private S.N. 258 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War.
He was living in Sydney when he enlisted for his third service as a Private (rising in rank to Corporal) S.N. 947 in the 3rd Infantry Battalion AIF WW1. He landed at Gallipoli on 25 Apr 1915 and on the same day suffered a shrapnel wound to the left buttock. He was subsequently declared medically unfit, returned to Australia and discharged in Sydney.
About 10 months later he re-enlisted for a fourth service as a Corporal (rising in rank to Sergeant) in the 36th and 35th Infantry Battalion AIF WW1. On this deployment he served in Belgium and France.
