Biography contributed by Charmindi Ranasinghe

Private Albert George Arthur was born on the 22nd October, 1894 at Giles Corner, South Australia, son to famer Thomas Arthur. Arthur had been working alongside his father at the time of his enlistment on the 22nd October, 1914 with the Australian Imperial Force.

Following enlistment, Arthur was placed in the newly formed 9th Light Horse regiment (also known as the 23rd Light Horse regiment) that was created in Adelaide, South Australia. His unit was dispatched to Melbourne between October 1914 to February 1915, where they received training. On the 11th of February, Arthur and his unit sailed from Melbourne embarking on the HMAT Karoo, arriving in Egypt on the 14th March, 1915.

On the 22nd of May, 1918, Arthur was admitted to the Stratford-On-Avon War Hospital in England’s West Midlands after being transferred from Field Hospitals after suffering a serious bullet wound to his right leg, severely injuring his Fibula. After spending 48 days in hospital, Arthur recovered from his injuries and, on the 9th July, returned to the front.

Arthur was discharged on the 8th of April 1919, where he went back to his home in Australia. On the 6th February, 1948, Arthur passed away at the age of 53, the causes of his passing are unknown.
