Japanese pilots of the Japanese Navy Tainan Air Group assigned to New Guinea from February 1942 - Saburo Sakai seated middle row second from left - one of the top Japanese Ace of the war who in 1997 lobbied the Australian Government to recognise Warren Cowan's actions on 1942. Standing top row left is PO1/c Hiroyoshi Nishizawa who went on to become the top Japanese Ace. He was killed as a passenger in a transport aircraft over the Philippines in 1944. Sakai survived the war having lost an eye over Guadalcanal. He passed away in 2000.

Flying Officer Gwynne THOMAS and Flying Officer Rodney YOUNG, cycling near Church Broughton in Derbyshire in July 1944. Five months later, on the night of 6/7 December, the men were serving aboard Lancaster PB290 JO-K as Wireless Operator and Pilot respectively, when it failed to return from a raid on railyards at Geissen Germany

Front row: George Pinnock Merz of Ballarat, Vic; H A Petre; E Harrison; D T Manwell. WIlliams went on to become 'The Father of hte RAAF'. White served in the Middle East and was captured and imprisoned by the Turks for 2 1/2 years before an epic escape. Merz was the first Australian Military aviator killed in action, in Mesopotamia.

John Jackson and his brother Les photographed at the Alexandria Zoo while serving in the Middle East prior to returning to Australia to join No. 75 Squadron. Both men would command the unit with Les succeeding his older brother after he was killed in action.
